What misleading ‘duty free’ airport shops haven’t been telling us…

When using airports, we have all been given the impression that official regulations state we need to show our boarding passes to be able to purchase goods at tax free.

Who is keeping our free tax?

What some stores have been failing to tell us is that they are claiming their exemption on VAT for purchases but NOT passing is onto to us. This means they are hiding the VAT cost in the total price of items and they, themselves are keeping the 20% VAT.

So why do we need to show our boarding passes?

The stores need to have some evidence of the purchase to be able to claim back their taxes. However, we customers are actually not under any obligation at all to show our boarding passes at the checkout.

Now this has come to light, the government is involved; let’s hope they put their feet down on this scandal. It is estimated that up to 88% of duty free shoppers are predicted to refuse to show their boarding passes now. I will be one of them!

Next time you are purchasing something from the airport, check that it is actually cheaper than you can buy anywhere else.
